The Dash Poem
I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of his friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning...to the end.
He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth… and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own; the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard… are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left. That can still be rearranged
If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real, and always try to understand the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger, and show appreciation more and love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect, and more often wear a smile… remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy’s being read with your life’s actions to rehash... would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?

Hugh Kevin Jones Hugh Jones, Class of 1962, passed away on April 9, 2022 just one day shy of his 78th birthday. Hugh was an outstanding athlete at Robinson and a great friend.
HUGH JONES OBITUARY
JONES, Hugh our rock, left this earth on April 9, 2022 one day before his 78th birthday, leaving this world a much sadder place without his presence. He was born in Toronto in 1944 to Anna Kay and Buck Jones. His dad played hockey for the Leafs and the Wings; upon retirement in the 50's, the family moved to Tampa. Hugh attended Mitchell, Madison, and Robinson where he made lifelong friends. He was a phenomenal athlete who lettered in basketball, baseball, and football. Hugh scored the winning touchdowns when Robinson and Plant met on the football field for the first time in 1961. Hugh earned a football scholarship to Wichita but later left the game and joined the Navy. Four years later he returned to Tampa where we met and married. We have had THE storybook marriage for 48 years. Our children, Dena and Cory, came along in '75 and '78 bringing countless hours of love and pride to our lives. Hugh had a heart of gold; he was always there to lend a hand to family, friends, neighbors, strangers. He was a loyal friend, a giver of joy and laughter and a lover of conversation. He was my partner, best friend, protector, dance partner, fishing guide. He was our children's role model and hero. Hugh is survived by his wife, Laurie; daughter, Dena Jones; son, Cory (Kyle) Jones; four-legged son, Otis; brother, Alvin (Sharon) Jones; sister-in-law, Michelle McIntosh; and cherished nephews, nieces, and friends. Thank you to all who prayed, called, texted, and came to celebrate Hugh's life. He lives in our hearts, our stories, and our memories. He is now reunited with family and friends in Our Lord's Home. I pray he is restored to health, happiness, and laughter. Hugh always believed in and lived by The Golden Rule. What a wonderful tribute to him if we all were to strive to do the same. We love you, Hugh, and always will.
